5. Krabi
The name "Krabi" translates to "sword" in Thai, a reference to a local legend that tells of two ancient swords discovered during the city's founding. These swords were believed to hold great significance and eventually became royal symbols, prominently featured on Krabi’s provincial seal.
In terms of modern history, Krabi gained recognition as an official provincial town in the late 19th century during the reign of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn). Initially governed under Nakhon Si Thammarat, it later achieved provincial status on its own, driven by increasing population and economic activity, particularly in trade.
By the late 20th century, Krabi underwent a dramatic transformation. Once a quiet area known mainly for fishing and farming, it evolved into a globally recognized tourist destination, famed for its stunning beaches, limestone cliffs, and island-hopping opportunities.
